Poetics of The Day: The Pessimist

THE PESSIMIST

IF WORKLOAD COUNTS FOR MONEY PAID

AND HIST’RY’S WOES WILL NOT DESIST,

THE GREATEST FORTUNES WILL BE MADE BY

THE DEDICATED PESSIMIST.

HOWEVER,

HIST’RY’S WOES WILL STILL EXIST

THROUGH ALL THE TALK OF ENDLESS TIME

UNTIL WE FIND THE PESSIMIST

WHO’D RATHER ACT THAN MAKE A DIME.

SOME TALK A RATHER POTENT CASE

AGAINST THE DREARY PESSIMIST

BUT I WOULD NEVER TAKE A PLACE

BESIDE THE DREAMY OPTIMIST.

BECAUSE,

THE GOOD IN WHICH OUR LIVES CONSIST

IS NORMAL· BUT THEN FALLEN MAN

GIVES PURPOSE TO THE PESSIMIST

BY SPOILING EVERYTHING HE CAN.

THE USEFULNESS OF EITHER ONE

DEPENDS ON WHAT OBTAINS TODAY;

I’M WELL CONVINCED BY TANKS AND GUNS

WHICH “ISM” HAS THE MOST TO SAY.

HOWEVER,

IDLE CRITICISM BURNS

THE SOUL AND BINDS THE HEART WITHIN

THE MAN WHO TALKS BUT NEVER LEARNS

THAT WORDS WEREN’T MEANT BUT TO BEGIN.

GOD ARMS THE BLESSED PESSIMIST

WHO THROWS HIS HAT INTO THE RING,

WHO RANTS AND RAVES AND POUNDS HIS FIST

AND DOESN’T SHRINK FROM ANYTHING.

MOREOVER,

HIST’RY KNOWS HER MASTER’S HAND

DISDAINFUL OF THE OPTIMIST,

SHE BECKONS TO THE ACTION MAN

WHO STARTED AS A PESSIMIST.
