The biography of German Chancellor Merkel shows that she was “a supreme and very visible Young Communist official in East Germany, responsible for propaganda and agitation. “ The account was revealed by Oskar Lafontaine, a former president of the German Left Party (Die Linke) in a German newspaper.
Beyond leading the Young Communist League, Merkel also held high rank in the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschland (SED), which was the leading Marxist-Leninist party of East Germany. Members of this party enjoyed a number of special privileges denied to ordinary Germans in East Germany after the Second World War. Among these privileges was the right to travel to “capitalist” and “western” countries. Ms. Merkel made ample use of these privileges, traveling often to West Germany and other western nations. The only East Germans who shared this right were senior officials and closely trusted members of the communist party ( SED).
